Writing a trilogy requires a whole lot more pre-planning than tackling a one book project. I’ve never really written with a full outline before, but I’m doing it for my Gypsy Moth series. It has some advantages: I know what needs to happen over the course of three books when it comes to plotting and character development, and each day when I sit down to write I understand exactly what needs to be done.
When I wrote my first two novels, I meandered; this time I’m much more directed. While it doesn’t feel as organic when I start to write, by the end of my time at the computer I know that I’ve accomplished exactly what I’ve set out to do that day. We’ll see how it all turns out, but I’ve got to say… I’m liking it so far!
